The Sturgis Buffalo Chip® celebrates the legacy of daredevilism at the Sturgis Rally with an evening filled with death-defying performances including a new offering from stunt man Kyle Ives and highwire walker Blake Wallenda
Sturgis, SD (July 23, 2024): In the spirit of Buffalo Chip CEO Rod Woodruff’s favorite mantra, “Ride Free, Take Risks®,” the Sturgis Buffalo Chip is celebrating the return of Daredevil Wednesday, as seen on CMT, on Wednesday, Aug. 7 during the 84th Sturgis Rally. Daredevil Wednesday features several dangerous performances in the Buffalo Chip amphitheater to wow rally goers including a new daring show from Kyle Ives and Blake Wallenda – The Highwire Wheel of Death. For over 43 years, the Chip has attracted top daredevils doing the wildest stunts including Robbie Knievel’s Main Stage Jump, Doug Danger’s 22-Car Jump, Nine Toes’ Burning Wall Crash, Rob Foley’s Burning Outhouse Jump, Big Ed Beckley’s Junk Bike Meltdown, to name a few. This tradition reached a death-defying climax in 2013 with the first-ever Daredevil Wednesday broadcast on CMT. On this day, stunt rider Clint Ewing attempted the longest motorcycle ride through a tunnel of fire. Seconds after entering the flames, he crashed through the side, barely escaping with his life.
Last year, the Buffalo Chip went even bigger with the Death Wire Daredevil Spectacular. First, Shawn Ives jumped over 11 cars in honor of Robbie Knievel. Then highwire walker Blake Wallenda and motorcycle stuntman Kyle Ives attempted what even the legends Karl Wallenda and Evel Knievel would not. Over the packed amphitheater, Blake skywalked an 800-foot highwire where, midway across, Kyle jumped over him with his motorcycle.
For this year’s return of Daredevil Wednesday, Blake and Kyle will join forces again. This time Blake will walk a highwire Wheel of Death, and Kyle will jump a motorcycle through a ring of fire that hangs below it. Several heart-stopping performances will kick off the evening leading up to this stunt, including Unsung Zero and Regular-Sized Joe bursting through a wall of Monster Energy drinks on minibikes in the Monster Wall Smash, and Shawn Ives breaking through a wall of fire while riding on top of a drift car. Guests will want to make their way to the amphitheater early as Crazy John hosts his thrilling Street Drag invitational at 3 p.m.
Action in the amphitheater continues after the Daredevil Wednesday spectacle with performances from Hinder and Theory of a Deadman.
