Tours will be led by celebrity moto-journalist and Cuba expert, Christopher P. Baker.
PHOENIX – Arizona-based motorcycle tour company, RTW Moto Tours is tapping into Americans’ newfound fascination with Cuba by launching a series of motorcycle adventures in Cuba this winter using modern BMWs and Harley-Davidsons. The 8, 12, and 14-day itineraries, which span the length of this fascinating island, are designed and led by celebrity travel writer, moto-journalist, and Cuba expert Christopher P. Baker.
The exciting programs—offered under the U.S. Treasury Department’s license for “people-to-people” educational travel—will include fascinating encounters with Cubans spanning the spectrum from artists and harlistas (owners of antique Harley-Davidsons) to baseball players and tobacco farmers.
RTW Moto Tours offer riders a choice of BMW F700s and 1200GS, plus Triumph Tiger 800s, and a variety of Harley-Davidson models imported from Europe.
The 8-day ‘Western Cuba’ program (December 3-10, 2017) combines two extraordinary days in Havana with an exploration of tobacco country, including the beautiful Viñales Valley, plus a visit to the Bay of Pigs and overnight in the perfectly preserved colonial city of Trinidad.
The 12-day ‘Western & Central Cuba’ (December 12-23, 2017) combines the above itinerary with a visit to Santa Clara to view Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara’s mausoleum and to the beach resort of Cayo Santa María; while riders on the 14-day ‘All Cuba’ (February 4-17, 2018) itinerary get to explore the entire island east of Havana, including Santiago de Cuba, Guantánamo and Baracoa, Cuba’s oldest city founded in 1511.
RTW Moto Tours supply a support van with driver and a Cuban road guide. Each itinerary includes meals at some of Cuba’s top private restaurants. Plus, participants will overnight at casas particulares (private B&Bs) in many locations—a chance to bond with, and learn about the lifestyles of Cuban families.
Hailed by National Geographic as “one of the world’s leading authorities on Cuba travel and culture,” Baker has written and photographed six books on Cuba and is a regular contributor to magazines as diverse as Motorcyclist, Rider, National Geographic Traveler and Playboy. In 1996 he famously shipped his BMW R100GS to Cuba and rode 7,000 miles, resulting in the publication of his literary travelog Mi Moto Fidel: Motorcycling through Castro’s Cuba (National Geographic Adventure Press). In 2012, Baker led the first group motorcycle tours for U.S. citizens since the Revolution, and has since led more than 100 group tours to Cuba.
